Patawomeck Village
At the tip of Marlborough Point is an area called “Indian Point.” It was here there was a palisade village called “Petomek.” Sharpened tree trunks encircled a village creating a fence that would repel enemies and animals. Reportedly the village included around 1,000 acres of corn cultivation. From 1935 through 1940, the Smithsonian Institution studied the area and revealed circles of darker earth created by the decay of palisade wood. Ossuaries were uncovered and 134 individual Indian remains were taken to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Now homes dot the Marlborough Point area and conceal its important history. (John White)
