James Hunter's Grave
James Hunter lost most of his fortune in the cause of independence. Hunter died in 1784, and documentary evidence suggests he was never fully compensated by Virginia authorities for his efforts. Buried at Union Church cemetery, his grave is marked by a simple iron fence. There was a tree that grew in the center, but it had to be removed after suffering severe storm damage in recent years. The Sons of the American Revolution placed a marker there in 1998.
