VMI Annual Report

Annual reports to the Governor and Legislature of Virginia in the mid-1850s revealed the extent of involvement in the Commonwealth’s military institute in war preparations and longterm plans to increase the number of cadets from other Southern states, make the school into a true Southern institution, and  develop a network of Southern military colleges (with VMI graduates in their faculties and staffs).

Additionally these reports depict the additions to the curricula which would prepare the cadets for future sectional strife and war. The foundations for education, military training, motivation and even indoctrination of the future leaders of Confederate Virginia were clearly laid during this period.
