History Lives in Stafford

Archaeology

Much of Stafford’s history is archaeological in nature: Native American sites (Petomek Village); Colonial sites (Potomac Church, Hunter’s Iron Works, various homesites); and Civil War sites (fortifications, camps, hospitals, corduroy roads, logistic facilities, artillery positions) are most significant. Some of these sites have been investigated by professional archaeologists. Additional insights have been provided by responsible relic-hunting.
